DEVILS BLANK FLYERS 6-0 ON SUNDAY NIGHT
The Devils played their sixth game in ten nights on Sunday but managed to put in the performance of the season. A shutout for Ben Bowns and a hat-trick for Cole Ully as the Devils dominated the Fife Flyers from start to finish.
The Devils outshot the Flyers 17-7 in the opening period but could only get one by Shane Owen in the Fife net. That goal came at 7:19 when Ully took a pass from Jamie Arniel and made a quick move around a defender then beat Owen to make it 1-0.
Cole Sanford doubled the lead at 33:48 on the powerplay, taking a pass from Marcus Crawford and blasting a one-timer over a helpless Owen to make it 2-0. Again the Devils outshot the Flyers, this time 14-7, but Bowns was tested as well, even stopping a penalty shot midway through the period to keep his blank sheet.
Ully made it 3-0 just 46 seconds into period three with an excellent finish past Owen for his second goal of the game. Joey Martin then made it four for the Devils with a patient finish having come from behind Owen's net to score his 201st goal in the Elite League.
The Devils made it 5-0 when Arniel patiently waited for the perfect moment to thread the puck through traffic to Ully who hammered it past Owen for his hat-trick goal at 53:54.
At 57:12, Josh Waller scored for the second straight game to make it 6-0, which was how the game finished. The final shot count was 49-20 and Ben Bowns picked up his second shutout of the season, but the night belonged to Man of the Match Cole Ully with his first hat-trick as a Devil.
The win moved the Devils into 2nd place in the league standings just two points behind the Sheffield Steelers.
