From Canada to Cardiff
In July 2014, the Cardiff Devils were purchased by a consortium of Canadian businessmen (Steve King, Brian Parker, Kelly Hughes and Craig Shostak) all based in Calgary, Alberta. In 2014/15, their first full season, the ownership group transformed the Devils into a league powerhouse, going from 9th place to winning the Challenge Cup and nearly winning the league.
The following season in 2015/16, the Devils finished 2nd overall, won the Erhardt Conference and lost in the Challenge Cup Final. In 2016/17, the owners saw their team win the league for the first time in 20 years, win the Erhardt Conference for the second straight year and win the Challenge Cup for the second time in 3 seasons.
2017/18 saw the Devils win their 2nd Elite League title in a row, their 3rd Erhardt Conference title in a row and the Playoff Championship for the first time in 19 years.
Steve King is the President and CEO of Alaris Royalty based in Calgary. Brian Parker is the President and CEO of Acumen Capital and Kelly Hughes works alongside Brian as the Vice-President of Investment Banking at Acumen. Hughes also played 4 years of NCAA Division 1 hockey at Cornell. Craig Shostak owns and operates Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen dealerships in Calgary.
Part of the ownership group’s involvement was appointing Todd Kelman as Managing Director of the Devils. Kelman and King have been friends for over 20 years and had been looking for an opportunity to own and operate a team together when the opportunity to take over the Devils was presented to them in the summer of 2014.
Regular transatlantic visits to see their team play have become the norm and every time they are in Cardiff, they are welcomed like heroes by the Cardiff Devils fanbase.
